4 New Year’s resolutions you should NOT have

And all of a sudden, it’s 2016! Time for that ‘new year, new me’ bullshit again. Everyone has them, even people who say they don’t. New Year’s resolutions. They can vary from ‘finally travel the world this year, to feed the cat more often’. Personally I gave up on these resolutions a long time ago, because they don’t seem to work for me. January 1st just isn’t  a great day for me to start something new or stop anything that’s bad for me.

First of all, because I still have too much alcohol from NYE running trough my veins to think clearly, but mostly because starting something new is possible on any single day of the year. And because it’s just an ordinary day, there isn’t so much pressure to hold on to this new resolution. That’s why I started my gym membership on some random day in October (2014). And guess what? Since June 2015, I have been going to the gym 4 times a week and I’ve already lost over 30 pounds! Everyone has their own goals and you have to start whenever you feel you’re ready, not just because a new year has begun.

Because everyone loves lists, here’s a little ‘New Year’s resolutions NOT to have’

1. As I already said in my introduction above, don’t sign up to an expensive gym membership, just because you and every commercial on TV think you should. Start working out, whenever you feel you’re ready and you have clear goals on what you want to accomplish. Otherwise you’ll just feel guilty, sitting on the couch with a bag of potato chips, with a gym membership card in your purse screaming your name Not to mention it’s a waste of money, that you could be spending on new clothes or a holiday.

2. Have explicit goals. Aspirations such as ‘live life to the fullest’ won’t last long. Break it down into baby steps. If you want to be happier, first find out what it is that make you happy. Subscribe to that art class or have lunch with that long-lost friend. There are small changes you can make to live a happier, more fulfilled life.

3. Spend more time with family and friends. It’s easy to promise yourself that in 2016 you’ll call your mother every day and you’ll have lunch with your friends every week from now on. But since our generation is always busy busy, just tell yourself you’ll keep in touch with your loved ones once in 2 weeks, it’s much more realistic and easier to live up to. This way no one will feel disappointed or hurt.

4. For everyone who want to explore the world, but doesn’t have the funds to support this dream (myself included). Start small. You can’t visit 20 countries in 1 year, without having some serious numbers on your bank account or a generous suga daddy/mommy. Plan 1 or 2 trips a year, this way you can enjoy travelling and still pay your rent and bills. Keep saving a little amount of money every month, this way you can plan that world trip in a few years.
